Mayor Scott McBrayer began the August 11 City Council Meeting by presenting a proclamation declaring September 2014 as GYN Cancer Awareness Month to Homewood resident and ovarian cancer survivor, Cheryl Bourn. Accompanying Mrs. Bourn were Mary Hawkins, also a Homewood resident and cancer survivor, as well as Kelly Rice, chairperson for A State of Teal committee. The Mayor allowed Cheryl to speak before the council about the importance of awareness of ovarian cancer and all GYN cancer symptoms. Mrs. Bourn, who was instrumental in gleaning the support of her community, commented, "I am so excited about Homewood's participation in A State of Teal. My community has always been so supportive!"

In observance of GYN Cancer Awareness, the City of Homewood will light Homewood City Hall and the pool side of the new community center at Homewood Central Park for the entire month of September.
