Gardendale Presents Proclamation

For Immediate Release: August 15, 2014

Raising awareness to the symptoms of gynecologic cancers is a very important mission and could ultimately save women’s lives. Three Birmingham organizations — the CanSurvive GYN Cancer Support Group, the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation, and the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation — are partnering to do just that with their “A State of Teal” campaign. The campaign is taking place in September, which is National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month.

“A State of Teal” is designed to raise awareness of GYN cancers, the impact of these cancers on Alabamians, and the need for research and improved screening tests. On August 18, 2014, the City of Gardendale will issue a proclamation declaring September as GYN Cancer Awareness Month. Present to accept the proclamation will be Doris Moody, resident of Gardendale and State of Teal committee member, and Kelly Rice, ovarian cancer survivor and the State of Teal Committee Chair. The proclamation will be presented at the council meeting which is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Gardendale Public Safety Center, which is located at 1309 Decatur Highway in Gardendale.

The City will also participate in this event by placing teal lighting at the Library, Civic Center area and adding teal dye to the fountain at the Civic Center. In addition, police patrol cars will bear a special ribbon on the patrol cars during the month of September. The Gardendale First Baptist Church will participate by having the sign near I-65 in front of the north campus lit in teal during the month of September. The rocket display in front of Gardendale High School will be lit in teal as well.
