Press Release - Athens Proclamation

For Immediate Release: August 24, 2014

Raising awareness to the symptoms of gynecologic cancers is a very important mission and could ultimately save women’s lives. Three Birmingham organizations — the CanSurvive GYN Cancer Support Group, the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation, and the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation — are partnering to do just that with their “A State of Teal” campaign. The campaign is taking place in September, which is National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. This initiative will be “kicked off” by A State of Teal Lighting and GYN Cancer Awareness Ceremony to be held at Regions Field in downtown Birmingham in the third floor banquet room beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. All media are encouraged and invited to attend to provide coverage of this event thereby spreading awareness to these diseases.

“A State of Teal” is designed to raise awareness of GYN cancers, the impact of these cancers on Alabamians, and the need for research and improved screening tests.  On August 25, 2014, Ronnie Marks, Mayor of the City of Athens, will issue a proclamation declaring September as Ovarian Awareness Month. Present to accept the proclamation will be Angie Norwood from the Lilies of the Valley Ovarian Cancer Support and Awareness Group. The proclamation will be presented at the council meeting which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Police Station located at 951 Hobbs Street East.
