A State of Teal Lighting and GYN Cancer Ceremony was held on the evening of September 2nd at Regions Field located in downtown Birmingham. Over 200 people attended the event which was the official “kick-off” for GYN Cancer Awareness Month. The program featured representatives of this initiative, survivors and family members of those remembered having lost their battle with GYN cancer. Dr. Warner Huh and Dr. Mack Barnes both spoke on the significance of current research in early detection and treatment of GYN cancers. Auburn Women’s Golf Coach, Kim Evans, an ovarian cancer survivor, spoke about her experience with the disease and her excitement about being a part of this initiative. Family representatives of those lost talked about their memories of loved ones as they led the attendees in a remembrance ceremony with lit candles and wonderful music by the MAKing a Difference Band.  Following the program, the BIRMINGHAM sign at Regions Field was lit in teal along with other buildings around the city and across the state. Over 85 buildings are participating by lighting in teal and over 25 municipalities are issuing proclamations across the state of Alabama and panhandle of Florida. The CanSurvive GYN Cancer Support Group, the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation and the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation worked together to encourage teal lightings across the state.
