September is National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. In accordance with the need to raise awareness to these types of cancer, their impact on Alabama, the need for research and improved screening tests, and support for women battling these diseases, a major initiative was established to encourage cities and businesses across the state to participate in "A State of Teal."

The CanSurvive GYN Cancer Support Group, the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation, and  the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation are excited to announce their collaboration by launching this awareness campaign for gynecologic cancers.  These include ovarian, cervical, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers.  This is the fourth year since this effort was first established and it is making an impact across our state.

In accordance with this campaign, the Honorable Stan Hogeland, Mayor of the City of Gardendale, presented a proclamation declaring September Ovarian Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Gardendale at the City Council meeting on Monday, August 17. On hand to accept the proclamation was Gardendale resident, 45-year GYN cancer survivor and the mother of Mayor Hogeland, Eloise Hogeland. Also on hand was ovarian cancer survivor and A State of Teal Chairperson, Kelly Rice, as well as Gardendale resident and A State of Teal committee member, Doris Moody.

In addition to issuing the proclamation at the council meeting, the Mayor is supporting efforts to raise awareness in the City by authorizing the lighting of the Civic Center, Library, Fire Stations as well as applying teal dye to the fountain at the entrance to the Civic Center. Police cars, fire trucks and official vehicles will bear A State of Teal magnets which will encourage visits to the A State of Teal website where more information about the symptoms of these diseases will be available. The Gardendale First Baptist Church (north campus) will also be lit up in teal for the month of September as well as the rockets in front of the high school.

We are very proud to honor Mayor Hogeland's own mother as a longtime GYN cancer survivor and are very blessed that she was able to join us and receive this proclamation. Thanks to the Mayor and his department heads for their support of our awareness campaign.
