September is National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. In accordance with the need to raise awareness to these types of cancer, their impact on Alabama, the need for research and improved screening tests, and support for women battling these diseases, a major initiative was established to encourage cities and businesses across the state to participate in "A State of Teal."

The Laura Crandall Brown Foundation is excited to sponsor this awareness campaign for gynecologic cancers.  These include ovarian, cervical, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers.  This is the fifth year since this effort was first established and it is making a great impact across our state.

In accordance with this campaign, The Honorable Ronnie Marks, Mayor of the City of Athens, presented a proclamation declaring September Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Athens at the City Council meeting on August 22, 2016. On hand to accept the proclamation was Angie Norwood and Tina Cooper, both daughters of Mildred Grisham. These ladies lost her mother to ovarian cancer in 2013 and are advocates to raise awareness to the symptoms of this disease through the local group Mildred's Angels.

Thanks to the City of Athens and Mayor Marks for helping us to raise awareness to the symptoms of GYN Cancer!
