Official Press Release A State of Teal 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 24, 2016

September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, and raising awareness to the symptoms of these diseases is an important endeavor that could ultimately save lives.  It is also a central facet of the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation's mission.  For this reason, the foundation is again sponsoring a statewide awareness campaign known as A State of Teal (ASOT) during the month of September.  As participants in ASOT, businesses and landmarks across the state will be lit up teal and cities and counties far and wide will issue proclamations recognizing September as GYN cancer awareness month.  Last year, over 110 buildings/landmarks and more than 40 municipalities participated.

This year, A State of Teal is excited to feature the Birmingham Lights in the historic downtown train underpasses as a participating lighting location.  Look for the teal tunnels starting September 6th!  You can also help us kick off A State of Teal on Thursday, September 1st, as we partner with Newk’s Eatery, who will host a Spirit Night at all of its Birmingham area locations and donate a portion of the night’s proceeds to GYN cancer awareness.  Visit any location between 4 p.m. and closing on 9/1 to show your support and meet local survivors, patients, advocates, and more.

About A State of Teal

A State of Teal is designed to promote awareness of GYN cancers, including ovarian, cervical, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers, and the impact of these cancers on Alabamians.  In the U.S., a woman is diagnosed with a GYN cancer every 6 minutes, and Alabama is top 5 in the U.S. for cervical and ovarian cancer deaths.  Four out of five GYN cancers do not have an early detection tool/test, so there is an imperative need for early detection research and improved screening.  Visit www.AStateOfTeal.org for more information and to view a list of participating lighting locations and municipalities.  Follow A State of Teal on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/AStateOfTeal and Twitter: http://twitter.com/AStateOfTeal .
