September is National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. In accordance with the need to raise awareness to these types of cancer, their impact on Alabama, the need for research and improved screening tests, and support for women battling these diseases, a major initiative was established to encourage cities and businesses across the state to participate in "A State of Teal."

The Laura Crandall Brown Foundation is excited to sponsor this awareness campaign for gynecologic cancers.  These include ovarian, cervical, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancers.  This is the fifth year since this effort was first established and it is making a great impact across our state.

In accordance with this campaign, The Honorable William Bell, Mayor of the City of Birmingham, presented a proclamation declaring September Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Birmingham at the City Council meeting on September 13, 2016. On hand to accept the proclamation will be Zeke Willis, Birmingham resident and employee, who lost his wife to ovarian cancer in late 2015. Representing the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation and A State of Teal was Doris Moody, A State of Teal committee member and board members of the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation.

In addition to the proclamation, the City of Birmingham is illuminating City Hall in teal for the month of September and diplaying posters as well as yard signs in front of and behind City Hall.

Thanks to the City of Birmingham, particularly the Office of Public Information, and to Mayor Bell for helping us to raise awareness to the symptoms of GYN Cancer!
